From: Gareth851 (Original Message) Sent: 11/08/2004 19:21 As Awnings have been mentioned a couple of times recently I went through some old paperwork whilst in my lunch break at work today and found a list of awning sizes for several Safaris. I hope the following may be of use or interest to some of you, it is listed with the model first then the year(s) and finally the size (in mm); Model year(s) size(mm) 12/2 1978-81 725 12/2 1982 750 13/4 1975-80 750 14/2 1973-81 775 14/2 1982 800 15/4 1974-81 800 17/2 1973-81 875 17/4 1973-81 875 17/5 1973-81 875 GTX350 1982 725 GTX400 1982-82 775 GTX500 1982 850 XL475/2 1982 875 XL475/4 1982 875 XL44 1982-83 775

Us classic enthusiasts still prefer good old feet and inches and will never come to terms with the new fangled metrication! Cheers Brian

I am interested in getting an awning for 1965 12/2,. I have taken "A" measurement using gutters- 725cms (as per stats in Gareth's post above). The awnings I have seen on other caravans are attatched by feeding poly strip into grooved awning rail. Do I get awning rail(as seen on e bay) and fix it under gutter? Or is there a system that utilises gutters? Did they have awnings to go with 1960s caravans?

My 1978 has an awning rail fixed just under the gutter, and it is a very effective way of ensuring that no rain runs down the side of the caravan when the awning is up.
I have asked on another forum if one of the experts in older caravans knows when the awning rail became commonplace.
I reply on here if I get an answer.

I was looking at a friends 60s 12/2 (Sterling I think) and the gutter and awning rail were a single assembly screwed on the side of the van.(original fitting) The awning rail I have seen on e bay etc. is straight lengths and I doubt they can be bent. I wonder if slightly newer Safari 12/2's than mine had either a rail and gutter "in one", or seperate rail, that would fit the curves of my Safari? Does anyone with "spares" have such a thing My other options are a 17/4 or getting rid of the kids and dog!

Kids, Dog who needs them?? But as they are hard to get rid of.......... I have looked at the photos of the last of our real Safaris and on some can see a second awning rail under the gutter and on others what might be a combined gutter and awning rail. Perhaps you could specify a combined, and some only got an awning later. The straight awning rail will certainly bend to the gentle curve of the gutter, and adding it does at least mean that you don't have to disturb the original gutter. From the other forum, it seems awning rails came in during the early 1960's, prior to that, there were a series of hooks on the side of the caravan so no way of stopping water running down inside the awning.

Mine has a rail screwed around the edge but it looks to be an afterthought rather than factory fitted, mind you hand build in the 60's might have been just that! Its got several 'holes' along the rail where its screwed on round gaps along the rail if that makes sense.

Thanks for the info. I went to caravan equipment shop today. The assistant said the straight rail was not bendable, and when I looked at the stuff they had, I had to agree. I did however find; "A 30" figure of 8 channel for use with awnings. Attaches to motor home gutter rail or similar one side and the awning strip the other. Manufactured in the UK. Ideal for the movelite drive away awnings." I wonder if this system is secure, as I have a seasonal pitch , but cannot be there every day.... and do not wish to find awning and contents scattered across the campsite! Does anyone have experience of this system, as I would rather not make changes to the caravan.
