Hello! After much searching have just bought a safari, dragged it from a field in sussex where it sat for years 155 miles back to Dorset!! The serial number is 80007 and it needs some work but we love it! Any info about the serial number and history would be greatly appreciated. I need a few bits....fibreglass battery cover for the front(i have the base but no lid!) a hub cap and trim(i only have one) and a door handle would be good for starters, we want to convert it to a 17/4 so are after some bunks if anyone wants to swap for a desk/cupboard and water heater!(kids need to sleep somwhere) I have lots of rotten wood to replace so have plenty to be getting on with. Great site by the way!!
Kind regards, Tom and Jo

Hi Jo and Tom and welcome to the group.
Your 17/2 is a previously unknown one, but as I have commented somewhere else comes from a week in 1980 when the factory must have been making nothing but 17 ft Safaris! We now have 80002, 3, 7, 9, 12, all 17 footers, and then only a couple more made before all production ended. As the year number changed at the model year change these would have been made in September/October 1979 and delivered towards the end of the year.
With regard to the parts you need, please let me know:
Is the battery cover the streamlined one? If so I have a complete box but it has been resprayed red and so needs a lot of preparation.
Please confirm your wheel size and I'll check my stock of caps and trims. I don't think I have any for the 14 inch wheels.
I do have a oblong door lock with key if that is the sort you require.

Hello Tom and jo, welcome to the group, many are here to help so just give us a shout anytime.
I have some original safari hubcaps and chrome trim surrounds that came off a 1980 17-4.
As for making your 17-2 into a 17-4 It is possible but you will need to know what you are doing.
Having owned both models previously I was able to have a look at them closely, You will need to take out the permanant sink in the bathroom and make the bathroom compartment smaller to be able to fit a bunk which is long enough opposit the wardrobe. After this is done I would find a second hand front bunk to put in place of the cupboards and drawers and then find a metal bunk assembly ( I do have one but I don't have the brackets to go on the wall). If you didn't want to go for a metal bunk assembly which is what was original in the 17-4 you could adapt the bunk to pull out into a double.
I hope this helps and if you require anymore advice give me a shout!!
If your on the facebook group you can see a folder of my 17-2 restoration.

Hi there, Wow!! great bit of info, thanks for that. I have attached (hopefully!) some photos of the safari with the battery box and hub cap etc, they are 14 inch and the door handle. I forgot to mantion that I was after an awning light cover aswell as this is missing! We have been busy today removing rotten wood and trying to make templates for the curved pieces that have dissapeared.....your forum and fb page are going to be and already are an excellent source of information, I feel like I may have had the gods on my side when I towed it home as now we have revealed the extent of the rot Im surprised it held together on the mammoth trek home! I have never been so scared in the first hour of towing but it towed so well I was ok for the other 2 and a half! As for the bunk, if you wouldn't mind e-mailing the dimensions to me that would be great, I could easily fabricate my own mounting brackets but I need to work out if its worth removing the chunk of bathroom required to get it to fit. On another note, my wife found a great safari club silver jubilee coaster down the back of the bulkhead today! 1959-1984, great!! see pic.. Thanks for your responses, Kind regards, Tom and Jo Some photos to follow, i need to edit them as they are to big..!!! T I think the bunks would be great! as they fold into a sofa. maybe something to think about when we've done the main chunk of work!!Jo Attachments:safaricoaster.doc (127 KB)

Hello again - it will definately be worth taking the chunk out of the bathroom the 17-4 manages without a permanant sink unit (you could get a fold down sink or corner one)
That coaster I think is a rally plaque. I and Brian have a few but never seen this one!!
I Look forward to seeing more photographs as your restoration progresses.
I will also try and get you some measurements.
Chris.

Hey there, After a quick(very quick!) debate with my good lady wife we decided we would love your bunks so dont worry about the measurements!! Did you have a price in mind? As for the rally plaque thats great! Does that mean this was a meet/event type rally where photos may have been taken? Would be great if anyone had any or was actually there!!
Regards, Tom

Tom
I look forward to getting the pics of the front box and lock. You should be able to upload photos straight into your message and I thought that they were resized automatically.
I have to disagree with Chris, I have never seen this coaster before and would suggest it was issued for the year and not just for one event. Rally plaques always seem to have the place and date on them.
Keep taking lots of pictures for us as they are a great help to all fellow restorers, as you have already found out.

Hello again.
Give me a ring on 07904976654 regarding bunks and wheels caps, I have the inner hub caps and outer rings.
Also I would reccomend buying a new lock off ebay. There pretty universals:
Try item number: 221245298874
You are right Brian - I didn't think about there being no date or place I just thought it would have been obvious that it was the weekend of the jubilee. I have a few rally plaques (not safari) where they don't have a place or date and instead just say Easter, jubilee, international ect because everyone around the time would have known when this was.
