Morning all ah my lovely safari went into a modern caravan place for a safety service and I got the call of doom yesterday saying it wasn't worth the work at their labour costs. ( oh and did i want to buy a 90's van instead cos they had one on their forecourt... NO I DONT THANKYOU I ONLY LIKE SAFARI ) Help! Shoes and brakes and a damper maybe but will get the full picture when I collect her on saturday. Problem is the caravan place will only fit new parts or parts they have had adapted to fit so I knew this was gonna be a big problem straight away! So please help me save dolly as she can't go to the yard! Have had some brill encouragement so far and thought I'd ask some advice on where I might be able to find the bits to get a mechanical person to fit and fix dolly up aaargh

Tee Gee An all too familiar tale if you send your Safari to a modern dealer/ repairer. Far better to find a small garage or mobile mechanic "of a certain age" who know how to repair and not just replace. You say yours need brake shoes, most Safaris use shoes from a Morris 1000, cost for both sides about £30. To fit them no more than 1 hours labour. If it needs a suspension damper, (or two) just get one off and go to a good motor factors and they will almost certainly be able to find a match. £25 each tops. If it is the damper on the tow hitch that is a different matter you can buy new from here, www.caravanparts.co.uk/classic-caravan-couplings-c-297_298.htmlbut they are £70 so some research might be requied to find one cheaper. So get your Safari back and don't be tempted by the modern caravans at the dealers!!

So we are on our way home with dolly right now and despite her problems I am so proud to have her behind us! I know the general public probably think I'm a bit bad but to me she is such a head turner! Positively we think we have found a mobile caravan repairer who seems to have right attitude and am looking forward to learning more when they come and have a look (hmmm well only looking forward to hearing things that aren't too terrible!) When we reach our destination I will make a note of the serial number again and post- thank you again and I will no doubt be asking many questions soon!
