We have a Safari 12/2, which has a cracked tow hitch. We are not going anywhere in the near future but would like to find a replacement part. We are permanently working in France. Can anyone advise?

Can you be more specific about the location of the crack? Is it actually on the tow ball in which case I can help with a secondhand tow hitch.
Let me know or preferably post a picture under this thread.

Paul Bad news! You can buy a new hitch for £305 - www.caravanparts.co.uk/classic-caravan-couplings-c-297_298.htmlGood news! I have two complete secondhand tow hitches both of which have good unworn ball heads. One is the cast version like yours, it's yours for £100 plus carriage. The other is an earlier pressed steel version but the ball is the same. £75 plus carriage. As I might get asked for other bits on them, I would be prepared to dismantle and take out the ball head and rod behind it for £50. Let me know if you are interested.

Brian, if that's a Sigma hitch, I might be interested in the damper and overrun bellows...also do you know where I can get any of the external e-clips that hold the pins together?

Andy
The bellows are available from any caravan shop - price £2.99. My local shop has a selection of different internal diameters, just measure the existing one.
The dampers on both of my hitches are passed their best, new ones are available from the same link as previously given.
I think I have seen the clips for sale somewhere but can't recall where.

Dear Brian, Thank you for your correspondence regarding our cracked towing hitch. It is the Sigma towing hitch that we have. If you supply the cup and the rod, will it be easy enough to fit as it looks as though it is a sealed unit? Would it be possible for you to advise us on how to replace it? Thank you again for your time and expertise. Paul

Paul
It is not a sealed unit, and "somehwere" I have a full exploded parts diagram.
I am away this weekend and so will look it out next week and post it here.

I have a pdf manual of the B&B chassis which includes an exploded diagram and parts list for the hitch which I am planning on hosting shortly on my website. I can perhaps post the diagram on here in advance if need be TBH - I'm not sure splitting two old hitches to make one is a good idea as there will always be some element of wear which over time mates the moving parts together nicely. A last resort yes, but if you are offered a complete hitch I would swap the whole lot over. For what it is worth I have seen the hitch Brian is selling and it is in very good condition. Four bolts and a handbrake linkage and you're done plus you've got spare parts to hand

Hello Margo,
Thank you for your comments. The diagram you have would be most helpful. Being a novice, I am exploring my options at the present time.

Margo, Thank you so much for the diagrams. This has enabled me to dismantle the complete tow hitch. Now I know exactly what is needed.
Brian, We will be in touch very soon when we have arranged a UK delivery address for onward delivery to France. We now know that we just need the rod with the cup on it in cast. Please hold on to this part for us.

Part no CC3613 Number 25 on the diagram?
If you have yours apart can you confirm the outside diameter of the rod and length from cast on cup to the end of the rod. I don't want to send you a part that is not right.
Where abouts are you in France? I have several friends who live over there and come to UK quite often.

Dear Brian, After looking at all the parts that I have dismantled, it seems that there are other parts which I need i.e.the handle and plunger so we will need parts numbered 12 to 25 inclusive. The measurements that you asked for are:- outside diameter of rod is 3 7/8" or 10cm length from cast on cup to end of the rod is 15 1/2" or 39.4cm This number is on the locking catch of the handle, if it is of any use to you i.e.PRUFZ F3064 Will you please let us know the new cost of these parts and how you would like to be paid. We are in the Charente region of France, close to Angouleme. We have friends who are visiting Portsmouth until 14th July, we are thinking of having it sent there in the first instance.
Regards, Paul

Soory Paul, I was hunting for an email from you, not a message on the forum!
I was away last weekend in the Safari and so I have only today got the time to dismantle my hitch to be able to weigh the parts you require and then be able to give you a firm price with postage.

Dear Brian,
The tow hitch arrived in France last night via Saltash and Portsmouth! Today it has been fitted, no problems. We are rolling again. Can't thank you enough for the wonderful service.

Glad to have got a Safari back on the road with bits from one that had reached the end of its road!
