I'm beginning my restoration of a 17/4 1979 Safari and the first thing is to get it the 250 miles from York to Salisbury. I'm thinking of hiring a car transporter trailer (tilt bed) and towing it myself with my defender 200tdi, but it's going to be quite a heavy load! I'm not quite sure what the shipping dimensions would be, particularly in overall width and width of the axle to find out whether it would fit a six foot six wide trailer. I'm guessing the overall length would be 20 - 21 feet.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Andy

not sure of the width , but when i move caravans on my beavertail, I f they are a bit on the long side, I tend to load them on backwards, so that the A frame protrudes over the back of the vehicle, keeping the weight towards the center of the loadspace. your on about towing with a trailor and your defender, It might be worth just looking at the rates to hire a 7.5t bevertail lorry over a weekend. have all the lenth and width you will need for the Safari and may not be as expensive as you think. A couple of yrars back I hired a lorry to go from Melton Mowbray to swansea and back to fetch a ex army lorry back, total cost including diesel was less than £200, and no worries. Nich
