As i'm a complete novice to not ONLY caravanning but owning a Safari...I Need some help..Please..
The caravan appears to be in good condition and looks like it needs a bit of help in bringing it back to it's former glory!!

Welcome to the fold.
There is plenty of willing help here, and a great deal of experience and expertise, but we do need a little more information about what you perceive as the problems.
However take the time first to have a browse through the existing message strings, particularly those on the Technical & Restore board, and the earlier ones (that pre-date that board) on the General board; you will find a lot of information there and it may be just what you are wanting.
It is also worth having a browse through the photo albums; as well as some chassis and brake data there are some albums showing before-and-after restoration work. Use the relevant ones of those to identify who has posted them (and the date), and thence use that as pointers to any message strings from them describing the work.
Beyond that, ask about specific problem areas and we will do our best to help.
Good luck, and enjoy your new acquisition.
Oliver

Oliver thankyou for the reply. I was wondering if you had seen any information (Tech/caravan manual for a 12/2. The handbook i have only really mentions the braking system. i could really need some advice on HOW to restore it? Where to get parts from? etc...
Regards
John

John,
Braking System:
Information:
I have previously posted quite a lot of information on the braking system (which in principle seems to be common to all Safaris) in the Group.
See Pictures / Chassis Handbook for the relevant pages scanned from the original manufacturer’s technical chassis handbook.
See also, on the General board, “Awning & diy service advice sought” (date of latest messgae in this string 12/3/05); Message 2 in this string and the attachment to Message 4 give a great deal of service information.
Parts:
I confess that I have been lucky, in that I have needed comparatively few new parts. Nearly all caravans do such very limited mileage, at least compared to cars, that one expects that on one that has been properly serviced throughout its life the need for new chassis parts will be fairly minimal.
However I have replaced a few parts in recent years, and my sources may possibly be of help to you.
New hub grease seals in 2001, and for that I simply measured the diameters of the housing and the shaft with vernier calipers, and then took the measurements plus the remains of the old seal to my local specialist bearings supplier, and he found me a current production one that was dimensionally compatible. I had the impression at the time that he could also have supplied bearings had I needed them. I thought that I had a note of the make and part number on computer, but I have just looked for it in vain; it may be in my file in the caravan, but it is raining cats and dogs at the moment so I will leave looking for it there until another occasion. However I think it worth trying a specialist bearing supplier in the first instance, for both seals and bearings (if the latter are needed) and try to let him have both the measurements and the old part.
New brake linings, also in 2001. My local caravan dealer (Harringtons of Delamere) replaced these, largely because I was pressed for time because of my examining duties, and they were unable to source replacement shoes but apparently had no difficulty getting a specialist brake supplier to reline my existing shoes.
New jockey wheel, also in 2001; just the wheel, straight off the shelf at Harringtons.
New coupling damper, 2005, supplied and fitted by Harringtons. Almost certainly this is a modern unit, but they would have measured up and sourced a compatible one.
Apart from that, the nearest I have come to needing a chassis part was one corner steady, which started to lose grip at one end of the thread; and I asked Harringtons to sort it out when they serviced the ‘van, fully expecting them to replace it with a modern one, and to my surprise they simply repaired the old one - entirely satisfactorily.
Hope this is helpful to you; do ask again if there is anything else we can help you with.
Oliver

The chassis running gear and tow hitch etc are available new from a Johnny Longdon in Poole I think. Go onto the CHETENHAM CARAVAN OWNERS web site and click on technical information and there is great list of caravan parts suppliers. I believe you can deal direct with the guy by mentioning the CCC.

Not sure about the Gas pipework, but it looks a bit rusty..
Any advice please (see attached)..
Would really appreciate some help on where i could get a mobile service done..As the caravan still needs some work doing before being moved

Mobile servicing:
There are a handful of firms advertising in the current Caravan Club Magazine. I don't know anything about any of them, so I pass on the information without any comments as to how satisfactory they are, but it might be worth a few phone calls to some of them and then use your own best judgement. Several of them list their qualifications.
Unfortunately none listed (in this issue) in Derbyshire or Notts., but several that are possibly within motoring distance; whether it is viable depends on how wide an area they cover, but again it might be worth the enquiries. The first one I have listed has chosen a name which suggests that they may offer a nationwide service.
Any qualifications stated below are as stated in their advertisements.
If you are a member of the Caravan Club they may also be able to advise you.
