New member David sent me a list of questions and has agreed that I can post my reply on here as some of the answers may be of use to other members, and some of you may be able fill in some gaps in my knowledge:
Do you have access to the manufacturers records as to the history and
numbers of Safaris actually made ?
I have been offered exclusive access to some Safari records but have not
yet seen them. I hope to do so this summer.
Can you quesstimate as to how many are still in use ?
We have 87 members who between them own 70 Safaris. I know of probably a
further 25-30 owned by those with no interest in the internet.
Do you have any sales literature and price lists as to my 1980 14/2 model ?
I have colour copies of the 1980 range brochure that has some great
photographs of all the models. I am happy to send a copy to you in
exchange for a few stamps to cover postage and copying costs.
Is it possible for me to acquire a wheel arch splat for my caravan as I
have now unfortunately lost one during a trip to Scotland ?
I would love spats on mine but have not been successful in finding any. I
will post a message to see if anyone else needs them and then investigate
getting a mould made and spread the cost over those wanting them.
Do you have any details as to the colours of the cream / green cellulose
paints for my caravan and where I might obtain these ?
I don't have any definite info but again will ask on the group.
Can you recommend an Insurer for my caravan ?
I had trouble finding an insurer who would cover a caravan over 20 years
old except for the Caravan Club. When I started I paid £35 for £600 caravan
and £500 contents. Now that I have two year no claims, I have upped it to
£1000 for the same price. You also have to pay £32 for CC membership.
Please note that I am quite happy to let anyone have a copy of my Safari
Caravans Limited Handbook 1980 and the ZIG CF6 Caravan Battery charging & Distribution System upon request and indeed any of the other leaflets in my caravan pack.
Oliver has posted details of various manuals he has for copying. I have a
1978 and 1980 owners manual

Paint Matching
Two possibilities, but both will need to actually have their hands on the 'van for a few minutes in order to do so:
(1) a specialist paintshop should be able to match it.
(2) I had excellent service a couple of years ago from my local Halfords (a fairly large branch) when I wanted to match paints on a car that was much older than any of their listings; their paint specialist on the staff had an extended colour book, in which each colour occupied a page with a hole in the middle, and this could be laid flat on the paintwork so that one could immediately see the degree (or otherwise) of match. Although this was merely an intial enquiry, and for other reasons I ended up parting with the car and so never proceeded, they could then have made up matching paint in any of their formats (spray, brush, or aerosol spray).
In either case, make sure that at least a fair representative area is freshly cleaned and polished immediately before you take it for matching; the difference in shade can be quite substantial.
Insurance
I have had excellent service for many years with Drewe (01299-401663), who amongst other things offer a classic caravan policy on an agreed value basis; this is a policy at Lloyds, and Drewe are the brokers. Not only have I dealt with them for many years myself, but I "inherited" the habit of doing so from my late father, who had in turn dealt with them not only on his own behalf but also as Secretary of ACCEO for several years; he placed the ACCEO group policy with them, and this covered a vast number of individual members.
While they are not cheap, I believe they are very reasonable and realistic, and their claims settlement record is excellent. I cannot tell whether they are competitive against other insurers, because I have not found another insurer actually offering such a policy ... ...
I feel that they are at least worth an enquiry.
Hope this helps,
Oliver
