Hello
We're waiting to get our hands on the 17/4 we just bought but I know it has loads of damp/rot so I'm trying to prepare myself in advance!
I have a few questions, is you don't mind lending your advice,
- when fixing damp is it always best to work from the outside in (ie. remove the aluminium panels 1st, then repair the woodwork and lastly the wallboards - forgive me if I'm not using the right terminology, I'll pick it up eventually I'm sure!) I only ask because on all the other damp repair blogs/websites I've see the repairer removes inside cupboards/seats/wallboards then repairs the wooden supports within the walls.
- do we have to use mahogany/hardwood for the repair, it just sounds expensive and I'm already being bled dry by 3 kids. Could we just use pine if we treated it first?
- Should we use brass screws for the reconstruction - to prevent any potential corrosion of the aluminium skin
I read somewhere (it may have been this site but thought the background to the site was green and not blue - I've been researching damp repairs obsessively) anyway, I read that you shouldn't remove any cupboards or seats or anything when you strip the wallboards. The damp in our van goes behind the cupboards in the kitchen. I can't do anything with the cupboards attached. What would happen if we took the cupboards off the walls? Is it possible to work around them and if so how? Would it affect the structural strength of the caravan if we did? Or am I just being paranoid?
- I'd like to keep the cushions that are in the van - from the look of the brochure in the gallery section here the covers look original. They're buttoned so (I assume) can' t be removed. What's the best way to wash/clean them - just to freshen them up, with the van being damp and all?
- where can I get a copy of the brochure from the gallery section? I can't get the picture resolution high enough or the picture big enough to make out any of the writing and I've not been able to find anything on Google etc.
I had more to ask but I can't remember what it was, no doubt I'll be after more info as time goes on.
Thanks,
Kelly
