I have just scanned the 1973 Safari Sales Brochure for Digbycenrhos, who intends to upload it to the site shortly, and in doing so I learned of a model whose existence I had not previously known. It also drew my attention to the periodic appearance and disappearance of some of the more short-lived models, and the enduring longevity of other models.
From the data now available to me, covering official Sales Brochures and/or Price Lists and other publicity material for years 1970, 1973 and 1980, plus the handbook for 1978 (although the latter is in the caravan so I quote data from that from memory), it appears that the varying model range in the last twelve years of production included the following:
11/2 Listed in both 1970 and 1973, but later dropped
12-2 A hardy annual, listed in all years up to 1980; I haven't seen any documents for 1981/2, although
I am not aware that of it not continuing through to the end, and have always assumed that it did so.
Together with the 14-2 possibly their two most popular models of all
12-4 Listed in 1973 (only, of these discrete years, and I had never previously heard of this model)
13-2 Listed in 1970 (only, of these discrete years, and I am not aware of the model having
reappeared subsequently)
13-4 Listed in 1970, NOT in 1973, but later reappeared; certainly by 1980, and (from memory) by 1978
14-2 Not listed in 1970, perhaps surprisingly, but in thereafter all years from 1973, and known to have
continued through to 1982. Together with the 12-2 probably their two most popular models of all
15-2 Listed in 1970 (only, of these discrete years)
15-4 Listed in 1970, NOT in 1973, but later reappeared; certainly by 1980, and (from memory) by 1978
17-2 Listed in 1978 and 1980 (only, of these discrete years). I haven't seen any documents for 1981/2,
but I am not aware of any 17s being produced later than 1980
17-4 Listed in all years up to 1980; same comment applies for post-1980
17-S Not listed in 1970, but thereafter in all years up to 1980; same comment applies for post-1980
I have always regarded the 17-2 as the flagship of the range, but in 1973 (when the 17-2 had not yet appeared) the company themselves described the 17/S (sic) in precisely those terms. I suspect that that may have been a new model that year; at the very least it was a fairly recent addition to the range, having appeared since 1970.
Incidentally the company themselves seemed to be totally inconsistent as to the punctuation of their model names; in different publications and different years they used the forms 12-2, 12/2, and 12.2 apparently randomly, and from memory I think that at least once I have even found two different forms used in the same publication.
