Hello, I wish to make my 1965 12/2 suitable for its original purpose (touring). The main problem is severe rusting of the A frame. When I towed it back from Sheffield area about 7 years ago the old boys who sold it welded angle iron over the weak areas. This was a temporary solution. This year I loaded it on a transporter to move it after over 4 years of standing. I have found an engineering company very local to where the caravan is currently sited who have quoted £340 plus vat to fold and weld a new A frame and reattach all the bits (tow hitch, brake mechanism, historic gas bottle holder etc.) The quote came with the proviso that he would be able to do it in one day, as their labour is £38 p.h. I welcome any comments / suggestions regarding my proposed course of action. Thanks, Patrick.

Patrick - If your contractor can do it for £340 then it seems a reasonable price, the problem is that if they overrun you could end up paying a lot more. I would try to get them to put a ceiling on the price, or get an agreement that if they take longer then they will stop and possibly you can finish off the re-installation of the hitch etc. It the bolt holes are in the right places it is quite easy to do.
If you need any more specific help don't hesitate to post on here.

Thanks for the sensible advice. I now have the caravan booked in for the work on 1st Sept. I am glad I started pursuing my options a few weeks ago as these people with useful skills and machinery are very busy!
