From: bardnamara (Original Message) Sent: 13/07/2008 10:48 I have recently acquired a safari caravan. It has 3 windows across the front. Can anyone help with identifying the year. I have no pictures yet but will add one shortly. Thanks for any help.

I can't find any plate by the door to give me a guide on date of manufacture The only one I can find in the picture gallery with a triple front window like mine is in the gallery for 1962/63 models. Mine also has a built in carrier at the back for a spare wheel which I don't see on any of the others. Also I can't figure out how to upload my pictures. Can anyone advise me how to do this? Many thanks

Terry
Hope you don't mind. but I put your pictures in the thread. There are instructions for posting photos in the "introduction" message board.
It is not surprising you cannot find a serial number, it looks as if all the paint has been removed from the side which usually carries the sticker.
From everything I can see you have a 62-63 Safari. The drop of the stripe to the back of the caravan, the reverse slope of the outer part of the roof to the rear, and the three piece window.
The spare wheel carier is almost certainly something that has been added by a previous owner - I have never seen one on a Safari, but they exist as an accessory on Cheltenhams.
A picture of the back would be appreciated to enable me to confirm.

Hi Brian Thanks for that. Here's the image of the back of the van. The rear window was removed some time ago. I'm hoping to find a replacement. Talked to the previous owner who seemed to think the van dated back to 1957 but was not sure. Slán Terry

Hi Brian, just bought a Safari a couple of days ago and am also having problems with dating it.... it is almost identical to Terry's with the exception of the window to the side of the door - ours doesn't have one. The rest of the windows, door and band are all the same. Could you date for me? Sally

Sally - Welcome to the exclusive group of safari owners!
In your other post you have given your serial number that dates your Safari as being 1968. (the first two digits of the number)
As yours is a 13ft it would not have the extra side window shown on Terry's as his is a 15ft model.
Can you please check if yours has one, or two front windows or three as shown on Terry's and let us know, or better still post up a few photographs. We have not been able to precisely date the changes of the front window and so your information will be of great assistance to us.

Hi Brian, sorry, should have given you more detail. have got some photos and will get them on soon.
It has 3 windows and what seems to be original fittings.
We bought the 'van just as a project and a step up from camping but upon collection we found it had so much more character than the sales pics showed and we fell in love with it. Our original plan was to strip it and completely re-fit ultra-modern(keeping the outside as is)but I spent the day yesterday online trying to find out its history/age and from very old pics (that I found on some website of one being fitted in the 60's) it seems we have found ourselves a little gem and apart from some very dodgy wallpapering, painting and varnishing all seems original. just found one small bit of rotten wood last night to the side of one of the lantern windows but don't think this is too severe at the moment.....we'll see. I have now instructed my husband that all the woodwork and doors are staying, just strip and re-varnish methinks.
This has gone from buying a cheap (£132) old tatty caravan to receiving a new member of the family!
